PedalCell Install

  • We’re excited to get you up-and-running. Installation shouldn’t take longer than a few minutes. This page details how to install on the front fork. PedalCell is capable of mounting above or behind most panniers, racks, and bags. Choose an option below for rear frame installations.
  •

Not recommended on carbon rims or inverted fork suspensions.
Got questions about mounting?

The following is provided in the box:

  • The PedalCell device
  • 4X mounting spacers
  • 4mm allen key
  • USB C-A Adapter
  • Green Circle Sticker

Step 1.

PedalCell can either be mounted with the generator pointing forward on the right-hand side of the fork or pointing backward on the left-hand side. Bikes with hub-based brake setups such as discs or drums can mount with PedalCell pointing forward on the right or facing back on the left. Rim-based brake setups such as caliper and cantilever brakes should mount on the left hand side pointing backward. PedalCell is capable of mounting above or behind most panniers, racks, and bags.

Step 2.

Move PedalCell into its decoupled position (comes out of the box this way). DO NOT PIVOT GENERATOR AWAY WHILE IN THIS POSITION. To put PedalCell in its decoupled position, pivot the Generator and Clamp opposite the spring force until the two pieces meet. You should hear a “click” confirming the Spring Lock has set. You can confirm that the Generator is locked by seeing the locking plunger recess in its groove. A slight push may be needed to help the plunger recess in its groove. Rotate the knurl if the locking plunger won’t recess.

Step 3.

Align the rear clamp jaw in the correct orientation. We advise using the 30mm fastener in the left of the clamp and the 40mm fastener in the right inserts. If your fork is less than .83” in diameter, then we recommend you insert the 18mm fastener in the left of the clamp, and the 30mm fastener in the right. Loosely secure PedalCell’s left fastener, then place the clamp jaw around your bicycle. Loosely screw the right fastener to close the clamp.

Step 4.

Insert one of the mounting spacers on the inside of the clamp. If your fork is a larger ellipse, closer to 50mm wide, you can skip this step. PedalCell should be able to work without a spacer on these larger forks.

All bike forks that are circular must use a spacer. Forks smaller than 50mm should also use a spacer. Smaller forks should use the larger spacer and larger forks should use the smaller spacer. If your fork is less than .83” in diameter, such as a folding bike, you will have to use our Extra Large mounting spacer along with our rear clamp mounting spacer. The Extra Large and rear clamp spacers should only be used on forks of this size.

The spacers align with the rubber insert located on the inside of the clamp. When inserting the spacer, ensure that stays lined up over the rubber pad during install. It should be roughly centered on the clamp once finished installing. If required, the rear clamp spacer should sit in between the teeth in the rear clamp.

Step 5.

Move PedalCell up the fork until its generator is roughly in-line with the top of your rim. If it’s not perfectly aligned, don’t worry. We’ll adjust its angle later. Make sure that the cable is routed through the clamp’s hooks then tighten the fasteners until the clamp is sufficiently fixed to the fork. As an optional step, you may use a torque screwdriver to verify the tightness of your install. A target torque of 20 inch lbs, or 2.3 NM, is ideal. Most riders are able to torque down their PedalCell with the included allen key at hand tightness. If you need additonal pressure level, try using a larger spacer. You may hear some creaking noises during install. This is completely normal. There should be little to no vertical or horizontal movement once properly tightened. We recommend you do one last check to ensure that the spacer is properly aligned. A misaligned spacer can cause slippage on your fork.

Step 6.

Adjust the Generator’s angle. Start by making sure the spring lock is engaged. Then, slightly loosen the Generator’s angle-adjust fastener. Now, the Generator can be moved freely.

A tape measure, ruler, or any other straight object can be used to optimize the alignment. A straight line should be able to cross through the center of your hub through the Generator. Once finished, tighten the angle-adjust screw. You may use a torque screwdriver to verify the tightness of the angle adjust. A target torque of 25 inch lbs, or 2.8 NM, is ideal. It is normal to hear creaking noises while tightening. Unlock the generator by pulling backward opposite the spring force and pulling the plunger. You may need to do this more than once to get an ideal alignment.

Final Notes

Always ensure that the Generator cable is routed through the clamp’s cable hooks. Never pull on the cord directly. Riders can install our rubber mount onto the Smart Power Hub if they wish to place it on their frame. Do so by aligning the rubber mount in the desired orientation with with the Smart Power Hub’s fastener insert, then install the fastener with the Allen key. The Smart Power Hub can be installed on a variety of places on your bike such as your handlebars, stem, or frame. Once mounted, you can secure the Smart Power Hub’s connector. You can avoid tangles and slack by coiling cable around the Smart Power Hub and using zip ties. The included green circle sticker can be installed on the top of Generator. to identify when the product is activated. We recommend that riders fit check PedalCell's mounting before each ride.
